In May 1959, life in Damascus, Syria was about to change dramatically. At 28 years old she was to meet her future husband. She was working as a teller at a local bank in downtown Damascus when a friend introduced her at church to Canadian businessman named Joseph Basha while traveling to his ancestral homeland with his brother. Destiny, fate, love or all three brought them together. Six weeks later, with her parent’s blessing, they were married in front of one bishop, six priests and three hundred people at the Greek Catholic Cathedral in Damascus.
She then moved to Newfoundland, Canada to start a life with her husband. She always carried her culture, language, food and Syrian heritage with her. No matter how far away she was from Damascus, Damascus was never far away from her.
After enduring years of cold weather, they moved from Canada to South Florida rather than struggle with the harsh winters. Their backyard was filled with lemons, oranges and grapefruit trees. Souad spent most of her time in the kitchen cooking, on the phone or entertaining her close Arab friends with a hot cup of Turkish coffee. She loved company, especially having her children and grandchildren visit frequently.
Souad was a devout Catholic with very strong faith. She was a member of Nativity Catholic Church and would attend Mass weekly. Her life long ritual consisted of praying the rosary daily.
Joseph and Souad had four children. In January 1988, Souad became a widow and dedicated the next 33 years of her life solely to her family.
She is survived by:
Robert and his son Robbie
Raymond (Ecaterina) and their children Julia, Sabrina and Adriana
