Winnifred Agatha Palmer-Haye A/K/A Aunt Winnie was born in Muirhouse District, in the Parish of Saint Ann, Jamaica, West Indies, she was the 7th child of nine children born to her parents Hylton and Martina Palmer. At age eighteen she moved to Kingston to live with her sister Ruth, who helped her to become a skilled Seamstress. In December, 1955 she met Richard Earl Bowlin and in 1956 she gave birth to her son Clanhope Bowlin. The union did not last and in 1966 Earl left Jamaica for the United States.
Aunt Winnie and her son Clanhope lived at Rousseau Road in Kingston for several years where she had a very successful Seamstress business. She had customers from all over Kingston and Saint Andrew, women wanting her to design and make their party or wedding dresses. In 1970, she migrated to the United States and was living in Maryland doing various jobs. However, she did not like the cold weather so she moved to sunny South Florida.
Aunt Winnie was an extremely kind hearted and generous person who was always willing to help or give to anyone in need, so she did not hesitate when her dear friend Phillis suggested to her that she should get her GED and become a Nursing Assistant. In 1975, she attended Sheridan Vocational school and earned her Nursing Assistant Certificate; she worked the night shift at Miami Heart Institute in Miami Beach and a Visiting Home Healthcare company during the day.
In March of 1980, Aunt Winnie and her son, who was serving in the United States Army bought a house in Cherry Bay now known as Miami Gardens. In August of 1981 her adopted son and nephew Dalton was able to join her in Florida from Jamaica.
In June 1982, Aunt Winnie married Cecil Barton Haye and they lived happily together in this home. They had a wonderful life and they travelled all over the USA and Canada. Aunt Winnie was Cecil’s rock of Gibraltar and took care of him during various health conditions and as her health deteriorated he was there to support.
Aunt Winnie transitioned on the night of September 25, 2024 very peacefully in her home and with her family present; she left behind in mourning her two sons, six grandchildren, her youngest brother Raphael a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. The numerous friends that she had touched in her life time and the Congregation at Cosmopolitan Baptist Church. Her life ‘s journey was completed knowing that she was blessed and loved from all who knew her.
